Bunka
Gakuen was founded in 1923 and has
since developed into
Bunka
Fashion
College
and
Bunka
Gakuen
University
. Together they have come to
represent the core of fashion
education and research in
Japan
, producing a number of
outstanding leaders in the fashion
industry.
The
Costume
Museum
was establishes in 1979. The
museum relocated to its current
site in 2003 in commemoration of
the 80th anniversary of the
founding of Bunka Gakuen. The
opening of this museum enabled
Bunka Gakuen to realize its long
cherished dream of promoting
fashion education and research
through historical costumes.
Today
the museum is renowned as one of
the leading museums in fashion and
presents four exhibitions a year
under specified themes.
The
mission of the
Costume
Museum
is for visitors to further their
understanding of costume cultures
throughout the world and to deepen
their appreciation of their own
respective cultures.

A wide variety of historical costumes and costume-related crafts have been collected for the museum.
Collections from Japan include kosode dresses, noh costumes, modern court costumes as well as commonersf costumes, bags and hair accessories, Shosoin and meibutsu textiles, and formal interior requisites. Collections from Europe include typical style dresses between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, haute couture designer dresses, East European folk costumes, hats, shoes and bags, ancient textiles, and art nouveau glassware. Collections from other countries include clothes and textiles of China, Korea, India, Indonesia, Western Asia, Africa, and South and Central America. |
